Oy, I fell out of the loop so quickly. I need to schedule myself some drawing time, haha. And it's also about time that I started one of my projects! Until then...

Hrmm. Not much to say here. There's quite a bit of apparent frustration with arms going on.

I was scribbling during a break during jury duty, and I decided to try and draw some monsters. I didn't really like them at first, but then they kind of grew on me. The last one is supposed to look like a shiny white pole until he smiles/opens his eyes.

I was watching So You Think You Can Dance and Nelly Furtado and Timaland came on and sang this awful song. She looked ridiculous and piratey, and of course I stole the fashion, tweaked it, and drew it on Ramona. Don't ask me why she's blowing bubbles in the corner... I think it was an exercise in profiles, which I'm not so great at.

YOIKS! I almost forgot to do the drawings for today. Sheeesh.

I lied. The commentary is I was furiously scribbling random thoughts (which I LOVE to do) but feeling really frustrated at how crappy everything came out. I have a terrible time with translating my thoughts to paper... then again, I barely gave myself ten minutes for this. I jumped from thought to thought.

My monsters are so uninspired. Gragh! Top left hand corner is a miserable Ben Folds attempt last night, so I count these parts as two separate drawings.

10,000

New project! The lovely meritahut has inspired me to try my hand at a 10,000 drawing challenge, with the goal of artistic development! The best explanation (coming straight from her) of why this endeavor is important can be found in a comment to her own journal here. I hope to emerge on the other side a more confident cartoonist with much insight on how to achieve the art I want. I haven't set myself a deadline - however long it takes to get to 10,000 wiser and greatly improved is good enough for me.

I'll kick it off tonight with drawing #1.

I tried to make my drawing less scribble/doodle-like and a bit more developed, but this is all still incredibly roughly drawn, and ickily disproportional.

Since my update yesterday, I reinspired myself to attempt the illustrations for Hanson's Get Up and Go. Here we have Ramona and Tyler, two of my characters who I pretty much dreamt up for the storyline for this comic, but who very readily got woven into my general line of characters. It's a really funny concept to have my characters serve as actors to act out different characters for different projects when they have storylines to play out themselves. Ah well, I'm flexible like that.

The general idea is that Ramona is a waitress/gofer/everything working girl by day, and singer/bar entertainer by night. Tyler, the new guy in town who has to earn his way out (of some situation I haven't figured out yet) totally falls for her. I'm not the mushy type, but for some reason I went for this storyline. Which is entirely not implied anywhere in Hanson's lyrics. Haha.

EGAD I hate the way I draw bodies, I've resorted to drawing curvy seemingly-structureless forms where elbows and leg shapes should be... I need to work on this proportion thing. I kind of like the idea of not focusing on proportional anatomy, but you have to know the rules to break them, right?

I couldn't seem to get Tyler right in this set of pictures. He needs a lot of work. Oh yeah. And there are some monsters in there too.

Sigh. Because I chose to store my beautiful combo printer/scanner/copier at school for the summer, I don't have anything at home to scan my drawings. Therefore, I had to use my camera and photoshop 'em, and they're covered with skritches and skratches that make me kind of cranky. I'll deal!

<strike>Humongo scans under the cut.</strike> Photobucket doesn't like me and is resizing my damn pictures. I guess I'll have to settle for crappy and small for now... hopefully updated soon.

Hooray! My first sketches since I've been home for the summer. I can't believe it's been a year since I came up with the idea of illustrating Zak and Sara, my favorite Ben Folds song. I did a sketch last year (with poorly scanned color to boot) of potential character designs, but they didn't look like they came from the 80's. So I decided to revamp their fashions. Zak's bowl cut didn't work.

I've been drawing these kids since I was a wee high schooler who thought it was lyke SOOO awesome to be "hardcore". Actually, Denver sprouted from my imagination freshman year of college, but I was still pretty much riding the wave of "OMG HARDCORE = COOL" because I liked Good Charlotte and I was dumb like that. (Actually, their first album is still a favorite of mine, but the rest... BLECH. They "sold out".)

In the bottom right corner is me scribbling out what I think would happen if Denver decided that he likes another staple character of mine, Claire. Yeah, it's probably deeply rooted in the fact that I think kissing a guy with a lip ring would be awesome. Or something. Hahahahaha.

Lurking behind Denver is Xavier's girlfriend, Lucy, and Denver is gawking at Joey and Tyler near the bottom. Joey and Claire were supposed to be together for Denver to gawk at, but I got tired.

It's true. I'm really bad at drawing minorities, despite the fact that I'm a damn minority myself. Stupid WASP suburb. Anyway, Joey and Claire were supposed to be going out but I don't know about that anymore, or I know they should be together, but I don't know with the Denver liking Claire storyline. Tyler is Joey's little brother, who stars with Ramona (Claire's best friend) in an illustrated version of Hanson's Get Up and Go which yep, I haven't gotten around to drawing yet either. (I'm sure that was at least two years ago I came up with that one.)

Tyler is in the upper right corner pretty much illustrating lines from Ben Folds' great song Fired (which I wanted him to play when I saw him live this spring, but he didn't despite me yelling it at him several times...) I'd say Zak and Sara's designs improved greatly, although I couldn't decide what 80's boys wear or what their hair looks like... I tried to make Zak look like an Indian member of the Clash or something. HAH. Right.
